Though you may be strong and healthy now, you could become disabled as a result of an injury or illness and permanently lose the ability to walk, use your hand, or perform some other physical function. Disability insurance may cover your medical care and time lost from work as a result of your disability.
Both short-term and long-term disability insurance is available, and your employer may offer both. Short-term disability insurance has a time limit for paying out benefits, such as 90 days, which is often used to cover time after a surgery or while getting treatment for a serious health problem. Long-term disability insurance may not have a time limit.
